INVESTMENT

  • Install a heat pump
If you’re looking for a new heating option in your home, consider installing a heat pump. They are the most efficient form of home heating. Choose an Energy Star® qualified model and you could save several hundred dollars extra each year.
  • Insulate your walls
Installing wall insulation isn't difficult but you can't normally get into the spaces. Take the opportunity when you renovate. Make sure there is building paper in the wall as insulation should not come into contact with cladding.
  • Insulate the ceiling
Ceiling insulation is available from most hardware stores. Or, check your Yellow Pages under 'Insulation - thermal'.

LOW COST

  • Install a thermostat and a timer
Instead of leaving your heater on low all night, install a timer to come on a couple of hours before you have to get up. This will save you money on your power bill.
  • Re-curtain
Curtains should be bigger than the window frame and close fitting with no gaps for warm air to escape. Use thermal or close-woven materials and linings
  • Switch off your heated towel rail
You can save money and still have warm fluffy towels... ...have an electrician install a timer on your towel rail, or use it only when needed.
  • Build or plant
Consider installing awnings or overhangs over windows, and planting deciduous trees that will shade the north and west sides of your home in summer.

FREE

  • Don't obstruct the sun
Capture as much sun as possible, keep windows clean and make sure trees don't obstruct the sun. If you do this you will have a warmer home and could save money on your power bill.
  • Stop the heat loss
Close the doors and windows of the room you are heating. Remember that closing windows and curtains around sunset keeps in warmth that has built up during the day.
  • Choose a heater based on room size
If you’re buying a new heater, make sure it’s sized correctly for the space you want to heat. The size and type of heater can make a big difference to your power bill.
  • Stop draughts
Stop draughts under doors. You can buy draught stoppers from hardware stores. For interior doors, try stuffing an old rugby sock with scrap material.
