In Your Home - energy-use is so much a part of modern life that we don’t usually give it a moment’s thought.

Get rid of your old inefficient fridge!

Old fridges are inefficient fridges. They waste a lot of energy and money, and they’re not good for the environment.

So get rid of your old power hungry beer fridge - or, if you're upgrading, choose an ENERGY STAR® fridge and you'll know you're getting a fridge that costs less to run.

It’s good for you – and New Zealand

There is a huge number of old, energy guzzling fridges and freezers in New Zealand. If you’re an average New Zealand household you’ll have two refrigeration appliances.  Often your second fridge or freezer ends up lying around in a garage or basement, where it is plugged in but rarely used. These old appliances are 2-3 times less efficient than new ones, and can cost $200-$300 a year to run.

In addition, around a third of all fridges and freezers were made before the phasing out of CFC’s, which are harmful to the ozone layer and contain potent greenhouse gases.

Put your old, inefficient fridge into retirement – it’s good for you and the environment.

Fridge round-up pilots – pulling the plug on old fridges

ENERGYWISE™ wants to see old, inefficient fridges put out of use more quickly, so throughout 2008 a pilot programme was run to help people get rid of their old fridges.

The fridge round-up pilots have now finished and are being assessed to see how a wider programme might be implemented - so watch this space!
