In Small Businesses the key to effective energy cost management is knowing where your energy is going.

4. Monitor your energy management system

(Make an energy plan: Step 4 of 5)

Monitoring is the check to ensure that your planned energy efficiency measures have been implemented on time, and improvements are visible.

How often you monitor will depend on what is being monitored. Refer back to your action plan to assess when target dates have been identified for specific actions.

You should add any monitoring requirements into your action plan to ensure that they occur.

Some actions such as those that require behavioural changes will require regular ongoing monitoring whilst other actions, such as purchasing equipment will require little monitoring.

You should monitor your energy bills and meters on a monthly/ quarterly basis. You may want to check on a weekly/ monthly basis that some actions are still being implemented.

For more information about how to go about how to monitor your business’s energy, refer to the guide Monitoring energy use.

Now go to the last step: 5. Review your energy management system.
