More than half our travel time is spent driving. If we include being a passenger, 80% of our travel time is spent in the car on average. [1.]

Over the last decade, the amount of time we spent driving increased by 17%, while the time we spent walking and cycling fell.

But car travel is increasingly expensive, as fuel prices rise, and it damages the environment through the emission of carbon dioxide and other polluting gases.

The average car in New Zealand emits 3.28 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent a year.

We all need to use the car sometimes, but we can use other forms of travel more often.
