Walking
Walking is a healthy and free activity to add to your travel plan.
Walking accounts only for 12% of our travel time. [1.] Read how you can integrate walking into your travel plan, get tips on keeping at it, and make use of the website resources listed.

Why walk?
Travelling short distances on foot instead of driving will save you fuel and help get you fit. It will also make your more familiar with your neighbourhood, and it is more pleasant than being stuck in traffic, especially when the weather is good.
Take action
Add a walk into your daily travel plan
For example:
- bus and walk: if you bus to work, get off at one stop before your usual bus stop
- drive and walk: if you drive to work, try a cheaper car park a bit further from your work and walk
- walk to school; take time for your children and enjoy a walk, or think about joining a walking school bus
Keep yourself motivated
Try the following to help keep walking in your travel plan:
- compare how much you have saved on fuel. Find out how much you could be saving in the section Calculate your fuel economy
- take a different route now and then
- team up with a work colleague or neighbour
- start your own walking programme [SPARC Push Play website.]
- find out how it will benefit your health. [New Zealand Heart Foundation website.]
